DEFA-DOKUMENTARFILM 1988 W H I S P E R A N D S H O U T
|
During two hours of film, we meet 16-year-old Jana from Naumberg, who breaks out of her everyday life with the music of her favorite group "Silly". And we meet alternative bands like "Sandow", young rockers from Cottbus, and "Zöllner" from Berlin as they tour the state-controlled East German musical landscape.
And don’t forget the youngsters Andreas, Dario and their friends, who dance ecstatically on a Baltic Sea beach to vent their frustrations. Later we find them soberly playing croquet at a backyard barbecue in the conservative atmosphere of their parents’ summer home. None of the youngsters or musicians introduced in the film could have imagined-nor did they intend-the radical change in the political situation that was imminent. The events of 1989 were surprising and far-reaching. Each one of them had to redefine himself and his place in the world, both privately and at work. The socialist instruction booklet no longer worked, and no one had written a new one.
