Whisper and Shout
Produced between 1985 and 1988, shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this Defa documentary a rock report, a music film was an important milestone. It grabbed attention in the East German film world, often so divorced from reality.
The documentary offered a new view of East German young people: rock music as a reflection of youngsters' contradictory emotions. It was a film about frustration and passion, doubt and desire, and it gave expression to the socially-critical attitudes of a new generation.
The film touched a nerve with a youthful audience that had a hard time recognizing the reality of their lives in the regime's propaganda. And it attracted audiences of all ages even beyond East Germany's borders.
The documentary introduced music "made in East Germany," both "alternative" and "official." As Feeling B members Aljoscha, Paul and Flake crisscrossed East Germany, encounters took place on the streets and at concerts.
